All of the photos were taken by me on a Cannon PowerShot SX500 IS.
My knowledge of PowerPoint was expanded. I was able to build my entire magazine in PowerPoint while only having to import few files from other programs. The files were imported from Kirta. A drawing tablet was used to add hand drawn layers, backgrounds, and images.
My production skills developed and improved through implementing new technology. I purchased a drawing tablet knowing that my vision had hand drawn components. GIMP was used to remove backgrounds from images. Krita was used to add the hand drawn components using the drawing tablet. The concept of editing with layers was something I learned with GIMP and Krita. I was able to edit each individual layer leaving the components above and below untouched. How does my product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?4/27/2021 AMPLFY is meant to appeal to a niche audience which is used as an advantage when engaging with the audience. This audience is people within the alternative scene looking or planning local shows. This is done through representation of the style and lifestyle. The style is reminiscent of zines that were a major part of the scene when it was starting out before there was internet. There are images of local bands and venues that are either familiar or appealing to potential viewers. AMPLFY is an independently published text allowing it easily reach the right people. It will be distributed online. This allows it to be shared by band or venues featured within the articles.
How does my product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?4/27/2021 The style of AMPLFY takes influence from 1980s and 1990s punk and alternative Zines. These zines were self-published and homemade with a sort of scrapbooking process. The pages have a combination of cut out photos, printed text, layered backgrounds, and hand drawn images. AMPLFLY is in grayscale due to the predecessors of the style photocopying the color originals for distribution. The content of the magazine distributes information about independent groups that do not make a mainstream style of music and are not signed by any labels. The information in the zine would have had to be sought out. These topics include and are not limited to local shows, bands, and businesses. These groups tend to have their own style that is considered outside of the mainstream bubble. The zine gives representation and influence for and of people who partake in the niche clothing styles that scene presents.
Placelessness is beginning to take place in film due to there being a cluster of the geography in the main capital of cinema which is Hollywood, California.
Due to the location of the cluster in production, Westernized culture and ideas are dominant in global film companies such as Sony and Universal. Other cultures tend to be watered down or caricatured on screen. These caricatures are often offensive and racist. Many examples of this are found in older Disney films such as Aristocats. Shun Gon was drawn with heavily slanted eyes and played the pian o with chopsticks. Another example in Disney film is the Indians in Peter Pan. All the tribe excluding tiger lily was drawn in a bright red and sang an incentive song named “What makes the Red Man Red”. All of these are caricatures of the cultures. Examples outside of animation are the caricatization of Latina women. They are often depicted in film to be loud and have heavy accents and sexualized for comedic effect. These examples show how other cultures are depicted as in what is acceptable in westernized culture at the expense of other cultures. The Disney cartoon Mulan is an example of watered-down culture in film. She was drawn with more western characteristics and traits. The film did not do well in China while it did in the US box offices. It was able to be marketed well in the US due to the westernization of the culture and illusion of representation. The film was marketed toward western audiences. The implement of multiculturism in film would assist preventing placelessness and harmful depictions within the industry. All of these depictions further the spread of western culture within the film industry. Smaller independent films tend to do a better job with proper representation, but are overshadowed by big companies in the industry. Large companies, such as Disney have a large sum of money to use for marketing and production unlike independent films. The independent films tend to reach a much smaller audience due to the disadvantages in funding and marketing. The article is written on how the news portrays situations and how that affects society. The new has a “negativity bias” as stated in the article, meaning that the news tends to report more negative than positive events or facts in a more negative way. The advancement in technology makes news makes real time more accessible. Due to devices such as cellphones, the news is hard to escape.
News consumption can and does have a harmful affect of society. The amount of depressing content is overwhelming. Viewing video footage and hours of reports of tragic events negatively impacts mental health. The news also tends to report facts in a way that they have a negative connotation, rather than a positive one. Events such as terrorism will affect how people react and will go in public due to fear and paranoia. It is important to stay informed, but not in such a way it is damaging to the viewers quality of life and mental health. |
