Courtney Padgett's
Amplify takes inspiration from 80s punk zines in style and content. The inspiration for the two-page spread is heavily taken from the book cover of Moxie and the album cover from the movie The Punk Singer. The goal is for it to look homemade yet professional. There are heavy digitally drawn elements and layers. There is a use of neon colors with black layered on top for heavy contrast to make the black and white images have the illusion of being glued onto the page.
I used Krita and PowerPoint to create the color and layering effects I wanted. I was able to use Krita to remove the backgrounds of the images using dancing ants. One I did that the images were moved to PowerPoint where filers from the “Artistic Effects” tab were used to give them a hand drawn look. A drawing Pad was used to draw the background and then it was moved into PowerPoint. I created the layers in PowerPoint on 8 by 11 slides. The “Draw” tab was used to outline the images. The images were applied one las filter to change the whites into different bright colors.

Q&A with Alt-j
WHO: The article is about the band REDROOM and the audience is people interested in local alternative music.
WHEN: The EP is coming out in October of 2021. WHERE: The EP is released on Spotify and the article is in the magazine Amplify. WHY: The article is written to advertise the band and the bands upcoming music. HOW: I am realizing this now, but I did not include a how. I need to go back and add that the EP will be released on Spotify. My product takes inspiration from 80s alternative zines. The are small self-published magazines that focus on fashion, music, and other things in the scene. The zine features small local alternative bands and their music. This includes and is not limited to upcoming shows, album releases, artist social media information, and venue openings. It is meant to attract and appeal to people interested in the scene and local shows. Magazines of this sort were typically distributed at shows and other events. Due to modern day uses of social media, my zine would be a website. It can easily be shared through a link or word of mouth. Artist and venues can easily be linked to their article making it more convenient for the viewer to visit their page, therefore further expanding outreach. My cover heavily takes inspiration from the visual style of the zines. It has contrast of textures and mediums while being grayscale.
Throughout the project my use of technology has increased from my original plan. I intend to add handwritten and drawn images and text onto the pages. I plan to di so using a program called Krita. It is a digital design and photo editing program. The abilities the software has given me is playing a huge role in increasing the production value of my project. I have also been able to edit my photos in the program. I have met and photographed two artist: Cardiac Arrest and Deepixiant. For Deepixiant’s shoot I videoed her moving for over an hour and imported the footage into VLC Media Player. I then exported every third frame as an image. There ended up being one hundred potential images out of the seventeen-hundred to be used on her Spotify and in the magazine. For the cover I was able to use krita and PowerPoint to get hand drawn and layered effects. The goal was to have the cover look as if it was hand made a then photocopied. The table of contents is fairly simple and has the use of callouts to catch the viewers attention. The images and colors being used are just place holders. The images I am planning on using have a color scheme similar to the ones of Cardiac Arrest and Quiet Science which will be used in the final product. The articles are based around the subject matter of the magazine, such as local bands and shows.
